Hot Springs Arkansas

Map picture

President Andrew Jackson designated Hot Springs as the first federal reservation in 1832.As the first piece of America protected for future generations , Hot Springs is essentially America’s first National Park .The picturesque beauty of this unique city is matched by colourful history feathering some of the most iconic figures the country has ever known.

The naturally thermal spring waters that flew into the bathhouses were believed to have healing properties, which is why presidents ,outlaws, athletes and other celebrities visited the Spa City.

Today you can still soak in a terminal waters,as well as receive massage and spa treatments on the world famous Bathhouse row, but not with these rates:…….

We could not be in Hot Springs with out having a soak ,the problem was to chose from all the bathhouse which one to chose,so we went with the one that was the most authentic rather than the modern ones.

I chose to do the bath with out the Swedish Massage ,if Swedish Massage than it should be done by a Swedish Gal…..so the procedure was as follows:

First of all No couple baths…so sadly each one went his own way and latter we compered notes  that were almost the same except the pampering issue that depended on the host,

I had to get rid of everything in a locker room and followed my host covered with a sheet to an old style bath that stood on legs , it was half with warm water ,this was changed by my host till I almost could not take it,then he started the pump and slowly I got into a half dozed mode….till he woke me and pointed to a 360 degree shower and then to a bed with a hot towel under my low back…man oh man this was close to heaven-sorry no pictures, but as I was almost “well done” he took me to a steam room where I did not survive more than a few minutes , then a relax room or I would call it recovery room from all the “treatment” but  my skin is smoother now and I can say I did it in Hot Springs.

After drinking a “gallon” of spring water we took a ride to the observation tower on top of the hill to see the view from 215 feet and have some lunch.

The main street has it all, restaurants, shops, ice cream parlours, coffee shops, hotel and of course bath houses, before  heading “home” next to Quachita Lake we enjoyed our evening stroll  as things got  slower in the city .

Great atmosphere and highly recommended to visit Hot Springs even if the Hot Bath with no cure all your health problems.

Ouachita Lake AR-C.O.E C.G

We chose a great spot on Oauchita Lake that is just 10 miles from Hot Springs.

Map picture

Oachita Lake AR

It is an old C.G and has only electric hook ups at the site, but the sites are large, levelled and spacious, there is a marina and a sandy beach.

Because of the landscape many sites are close to the water with a great view.

After settling down we were ready for a walk but suddenly the wind picked up and it became very stormy and dark, the electricity fell and it looked really bad… was pulled the TV antenna down and hopped for the best-that came earlier than we expected.

The combination of the rain and the rain brought some outstanding natural phenomena such as rainbows and beautiful colors of the waters and the sky.

Some times the rainbow reflection can be see in the lake,we just stood there and enjoyed the scenery as it changed in front of us as a motion movie.

We could not our eyes from this side of the C.G and almost missed an amazing sunset on the other side.

Talimena Scenic Drive Arkansas-Oklahoma

Ouachita National Forest

Map picture

Talimena Scenic Drive AR+OK

The 54 Mile Talimena Scenic Drive is one of the highest mountain ranges between the Appalachians and the Rockies.

One breathtaking panorama follows another as this national forest scenic byway winds along the crest of forested mountains between Mena Arkansas and Talihina Oklahoma.

This one I took through the windshield (after I stopped …)

And this through the side mirror showing the winding road behind us.

There are 26 viewing points along the T.S.D all with spacious parking space to allow few cars to park at the same time, but on Sunday the traffic was very slow and I could actually stop in the middle of the Hwy to take pictures.

On one of the highest stops we found a fire observation tower –Closed, the information on the board-missing and the toilets-closed,,,well it is August and the season is over…..

Mena AR

Map picture

Mena population of 5737 can be considered the “heart and the pride” of the Ouchita Mountains  ,It is the most scenic and colourful range with peaks ranging up to 2,681 feet.

Just 13 Miles North West of Mena is Queen Wilhelmina S.P which lies adjacent to Talimena Scenic Drive , a National Scenic Highway ,and this is only few reason for us to choose Mena to be our base for the next few days.

The ride from Fort Smith to Mena was 110M,but with the scenery ,rolling hwy and the colors it seemed much shorter.

Kris was waiting for us at the gate of Iron Mountain Camping and escorted us to our site that was levelled, had FHU,  great Wi-Fi reception and close to a spotless ,comfortable bath house.

Mena AR

This C.G that has 70 sites , belongs to Christian Motorcyclists Association (CMA) that hosts 2 annual with 3000   Motorcycle coming from all over the country.

Mena has a very nice Down Town ,beautiful Old Train Depot ,used now as a Museum and a visitor center

We completed the visit in half a day before heading towards Cossatot River S.P that has 12.5 Miles of one of the most rugged and spectacular river corridors in the central US .

But as you can see NOT in August…but imagine kayaks going through this “masse” when the water is high…

Any how we had a good time walking the rocks and enjoying the fresh cool water.

On the way back “home” we spotted this rare scene and a symbol of FREE bird forever.
