Algoma&Stergeon Bay WI

Saturday with a good weather is a recipe for an adventurist  day trip  in the Green Bay area.

Algoma WIAlgoma WI

Just 30 Miles East on the Michigan Lake Algoma beautiful town held a street fest, with music, parade, old car show and vendors, people that familiar with this kind of event had their chairs ready and lined up along the street waiting with a 6 inch hot dog & a beer for the parade to start, it sure was a very nice one.

It was interesting to watch the  fishing boats sail  in and out of the harbor with a fresh catch and then clean the fish on the cleaning fish hut.

The weather changed several times ,heavy clouds & sun light played a colorful scene as we headed  North along the coast,I just had to stop the truck and shoot this picture,I hope you like it as much as I do.

Stergeon Bay is a beautiful town connected to the main land with 2 bridges that occasionally open when a vessel has to go through,we strolled along the down town and the promenade watching the boats in the harbor while music was heard from different places .

Tire true story:

I was looking to replace my truck tires , got a quote that  I agreed to but he could get the tires in only in a week so I drove to another tire out fit and for the same tires he was asking 90US$ more per tire than the first place,I could not believe it and told him about the first quote,he picks the phone ,talks to the boss and meets the price…..he went down 90$ per tire-do you believe it???imagine the profit he makes…any how he could get them only in a few days ,so it did not work here too.

The lesson learned here is clear –shop around and save.

Entering Wisconsin from Michigan we stopped at the Welcome Center and collected brochures and events lists on counties in Wisconsin that we planned to visit  ,with the kind help of the great staff we also managed to reserve a site in Egg Harbor in Door busy county that would be our next stop after Green Bay.

Loaded with food, gas (cheaper than in Canada) ,RV site reserved in Door county and with a song in the heart we made our way to Green Bay.

Our first stop in Wisconsin was in Oneida Casino  Green Bay Wisconsin near the Airport, there are only few RV spots with 30A electrical hookups (15 $ ) but we were fortunate to get a spot because the opening football game took place on the 9th of August in town and all the motels, hotels and RV parks were full.

Our RV neighbors told us that they came all the way from Michigan to the game that starts at 7PM but they will be there at 2PM for the Tailgate party and suggested us to see this pregame gathering .

On the next day we drove to High Bluff S.P on the Winnebago Lake and did some hiking along the rim ,,it is 3M easy hike   that took us to great view points with great Bluffs that are a part of the Niagara plate.

The weather was just perfect and we could enjoy this beautiful day in the park that was almost empty from visitors-may be they were all t the Football Game….

As we arrived to the Casino RV park I realized that we are very short with water and there was no way to fill ,so we took cloths ,shampoo , soap to the SP and used the their facilities to wash after the hike.

On the way back we drove through Appleton that accordingly to the news was hit badly by a tornedo just few days ago ,but saw no signs of damage.

Our next stop on the way to the C.G was the Football arena to experience the  Tailgate party,we reached the stadium 3 hours before the game starts but the arena parking lot  was already full ,all the business places, private houses, gas stations offered parking for 10-20$ depending on the distance to the arena and some even offered tickets to the game, but everyone was barbequing and having fun and was nice to see-unfortunately we learned later that the Green Bay team lost to the Cardinals….

Crossing the boarder in SSM

We reached Sault Sue Marie bridge around 3PM ,there was a short waiting line of vehicles waiting to cross from Canada to the US ,from the time we got to the custom boot it took few questions ,forms to be filled and in no time we were in Michigan on the way to the SSM Walmart to get supplies .

Last time we crossed the US customs took all the chicken products we had and some fruits, so this time we decided to cross “empty” –and as the Murphy law works –they did not even go to the trailer…

We did our shopping and replaced the blown trailer tire ( cheaper in the US than in Canada)as it was late and after a long drive we stayed the night in the parking lot with some other RVers.

Actually we do not spend a night in a shopping center but in this case it worked for us ,we could shop late, change a tire ,use the bathroom and stay for free in the parking lot.

In the next morning we drove to Manistique MI and spend a day in the Seney National Wild Life Refuge, the volunteers there are very helpful and nice,we saw  15 minute movie about the biggest refuge in the area and then took a scenic drive followed by a hike.

On the way we saw Swans,Loons,Mushrooms and Osprey nesting.

The nature there is  close ,beautiful, smelly, powerful and if you listen closely –music can be herd and great connection is made.

Wikwemikong 53RD annual cultural fest

A great meeting of the First Nation People was held in Wikwemikong Thunderbird Park Manitoulin Island Ontario and although we attended the Sudbury Pow Wow just a week before we decided not to miss this one because it was a huge gathering  from Canada and the US.

The Pow Wow circle was formed by colorful dancers from all ages,it was so nice to see the respect to the elders and the tradition handed from one generation to the other.

The music , the dances are very catchy and it is difficult to stay sited ,so Shula joined the  circle and was swept away by this almost hypnotic atmosphere.

The strong unique music is played by drummers sitting in circle using the drums and their voices, some times hitting very high notes ,they reach these high notes by pressing their vocals with their fingers.

We had a chance to be photographed   with one of the Chiefs that was happy to welcome us to this big event.

During this weekend it held many activities and our friends Nicky & Grant decided to show us around their neighbor town, the weather was great and made the day a very pleasant one.

An old car show went through the main street downtown and a juggler did a great job with his tricks for everyone's amusement.

After dinner we went to see a Roller Skate Derby ,it was our first time to see this physical game and although the rules were explained to us it is still a mystery… one thing is for sure these girls are strong.
