2nd Day Beckley WV-New River Gorge WV

It is hard to believe that only yesterday there was a storm and heavy rain,at 8AM (It was when I woke up) the skies were blue with white feather clouds and the paddle at the entrance to the trailer was almost dry, the weather report was for hot weather during the next few days and no storm expected

I am happy that it worked out this way and we did go ahead with our original plans ,but of course it could turn to be a bad decision as well, you never know.

We loaded the truck with a picnic box, water and some spare cloths and took off to the River Gorge visitor Center next to the Bridge but found it CLOSED due to a shortage of electrical power, there were NO maps displayed the toilets were locked and no one from the Information Crew was around to assist the many visitors that were there.

As it was our first visit to the area we had to relay on some brochures we picked on the way.

The Bridge is visible from many look out points and there is a road going under the bridge as well (we found about it later and will try to do it in the next days).

The gorge is a stunning view and we sat there looking at it for a while.

New River Gorge Old Bridge WV

Our trip continued towards Thurmond a very old town along the railway that was very busy during the time when mines were active, now only 6 people live there and it might fit been called ghost town.

A river is running along the Hwy to the old town creating many rapids and small waterfalls,we stopped and one and cooled off from the warm weather,

Sure hope you're getting the comment notification now. It's hard to believe they didn't have somebody around even with the power out. That bridge is just gorgeous.
