In the small town of Alma where the our ride started we after asking around we finally found the “famous” statue of Mr.Spinach –Popeye , he was standing in a small groomed garden with fountain ,it was there is because of and old cane factory in the town.
Further North along HWY 71 we stopped for a picnic in one of the most groomed, beautiful, cleaned S.P –LAKE FT.SMITH S.P
Middle of August , children are still not at school and we had this park for ourselves…
Point of Artist is a great spot to stop ,take a deep breath and inhale the view on this Boston Mountain Range, there is also a store with a small Indian Museum, bottles of water with sugar attract humming birds and only add to the whole scene.
We passed a few small towns without stopping but I am happy we stopped in Winslow,it actually happened only because I saw this building as we were “almost” passing this one too.
The building was closed but a man working on one of the rooms inside opened it for us ,it was full with old furniture, pictures, bar top,signs- an heaven for an antique collector,we had a great chat with him and learned that this town was built when this railroad tunnel took to long and the workers had no place to live ,so that is how Winslow was “born”, I just love these unexpected “meetings” with the locals.
Devil’s Den S.P has it all,c.g,swimming pool, lake, but no falls in the summer…so we hiked a short way along the lake and started our way back on Hwy 540 passing through stunning views .
Another great day just before we move South towards Mena AR.
